About My Clients

I am experienced and competent with a broad range of presenting concerns, having worked with persons with mild difficulties to severe mental health issues. I have also worked with persons identifying with a broad range of socio-cultural identities. My ideal client is anyone who aims in their therapy to get beyond only coping skills and broad expert opinions to take the risk to know themselves, their hopes, desires, and heartaches. In short, my ideal client seeks a very personal psychotherapy.

My Background and Approach

I have a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from University of Missouri-Kansas City and have practiced in a variety of settings. My area of scholarly and clinical focus is psychoanalytic theory and practice, a theory of treatment shown to be effective for a broad range of concerns (Google "Jonathan Shedler" if you want to see the research). As such, my approach to psychotherapy is broadly and flexibly psychoanalytic, with a variety of therapy techniques from other schools integrated into this framework. This means I pay close attention to how people interact with others and work with their emotions and needs, as well as how they learned to be with these parts of themselves. Often times, people come to therapy seeking or needing a new experience of some sort in order to lead a more satisfying life, whatever that may mean to them. My role is to try to help people find this experience and/or to understand what kind of action they need to take to facilitate inner change.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I believe firmly in the basic dignity of all people, across ethnic identity, sexual-orientation, religious faith, gender, socio-economic background, and country of origin. I strive to bring this kind of respect to my clinical work and have found that this has proven to be a worthwhile and challenging goal. As such, I appreciate and encourage conversations between myself and the people I work with around topics of individual and cultural diversity, including misunderstandings and feedback about my impact. On a related note, I take seriously the power inherent in my role as your psychotherapist and strive to be transparent and honest with you at all times about the intention behind my interventions (including pausing and admitting that I'm unsure and need to reflect on myself!). I do this to preserve and/or facilitate awareness of your own agency and collaboration in your treatment as I view the freedom to say "yes" and "no" to be part of human dignity.
