Major depressive disorder is an illness that can be treated effectively with modern medicines. Sadly, this fact is often overlooked, even by people who adopt a science-based approach in other areas of their lives. A tragedy of modern medicine is that we have the tools to manage depression, but only a fraction of sufferers seek treatment. Depression is systematically under-diagnosed and under-treated.

Anxiety is characterized by systematic worry. It can manifest as sensations of nervousness, apprehension and sometimes panic. While such feelings can be normal, a psychiatrist may deem them symptomatic of an anxiety disorder when they persist for a sustained period and impair ordinary activities. In my practice, I routinely diagnose and treat patients with anxiety disorders, including generalized anxiety and social anxiety.
