About My Clients
I believe clients succeed when they are honest in therapy. Therefore I want to work with people who value an authentic relationship. I don't like to waste people's time. I will strive be as honest with you as I possibly can be about my experience with you, so I can actually be an agent of change.
My Background and Approach
From the Humanistic perspective, I view every person as the expert on their life and experience. Therefore, I do not give advice or make interpretations. While I may explore avenues of thought you may not have considered, I do not approach these from the belief that I know more about you than you know about you. I will be honest about my experience with you, so that you're better able to understand your effect on others - THIS IS HOW PEOPLE MATURE. My best work has come from me saying the thing that everyone in the room is thinking, but won't say for one reason or another.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe everyone is the expert on their own life. Considering no one has actually lived one second as you, the simple truth that you know more about you than anyone possibly could is something I value. This means I don't pretend I am your expert - therapists that believe and utilize this approach (in my experience many do) actively make you dependent on them and less able to function on your own. This does not mean I devalue my insight, knowledge base, or education. It means I believe growth and maturity come from actual lived experience, not from being told what you should or shouldn't do. It comes from time spent in an environment that fosters self-actualization (aka meeting your own needs and thriving). My approach does include psychoeducation on tools and perspectives for people to use, but I present these tools in the context of having been helpful for many as opposed to a mandatory lesson. This allows people to regulate their own experience and take care of themselves.
