Holistic therapy takes into account that the whole person is important in the therapeutic process. Working through the lens of holistic psychology, a therapist uses a client-centered approach that seeks to balance inquiry into the mind, body and spirit. As a holistic clinician, I encourage the client to work with their own inner wisdom to understand their unique experiences. I incorporate somatic awareness, transpersonal experiences, and art-based practices into therapy sessions.
Anxiety holds a lot of information for the client. In therapy, I tend to slow down the processing of anxiety and incorporate practices of mindfulness and present-moment awareness. I find it is important to work towards providing a sense of safety for the parts of the client that feel anxious.
When I work with BIPOC (Black, Indigenous People of Color) with a history of oppressive and traumatic experiences, it is essential that a component of exploring "family of origin" issues include an examination of historical and intergenerational trauma. I utilize a depth-oriented therapy process that explores historical harms and intergenerational wounds through the examination of family narrative, patterns, history and relationship to privilege and oppression.
Race informs every area of our lives--relationships, social, familial, financial, educational, medical, gender, class, safety and more. I believe deep and profound healing can happen through the exploration of racial identity. I use a decolonizing framework to assist clients in defining the impact of race in their lives and work to develop and recognize the client's strengths and inner resources to navigate race-related stress and trauma.
