Abuse is a rupture in safety, and is an attack on our shared need for loving connections. Abuse, which includes neglect, alters our innate natural developmental progression, creating 'stuck' states that persist into later in life, needing special attention in order to unstick the impacts and overcome the disruption to our authentic birth right to become fully ourselves.
Stress is just a part of life, and at low levels it functions to focus and motivate us. However, persistent stress is signaling that something needs to change in order to stave off long-term mental and physical health concerns. Stress at more powerful levels, when we feel threatened or in danger, surges a stronger energy through us, generating a sequence of natural impulses called ‘Fight/Flight' to 'Freeze/Frozen’. These impulses are not choices, but reflexes, and can lead to Trauma.
Attachment is our core requirement for our survival as newborns indeed beginning in the womb. How this goes determines how our body develops and our mind organizes and forms. Attachment sets the patterns of our nervous system, builds our Resilency, and shapes our relational capacities as we mature in time. Many 'diagnosable' symptoms & behaviors have their root in our bonding experiences, and are best understood as 'signals' of how this unfolded early in life.

Rather than attending mostly, or exclusively, to our verbal narratives and ‘thinking’ abilities, or what came to be called ‘Talk Therapy’, Somatic Psychotherapy places attention on our fuller reality: the interwoven connections between our brain/body/mind as a whole, within the environment and relationships.
