It is said that "we don't see things as they are; we see them as we are." We each have a certain lens through which we see the world, which creates perceptions that may not always be accurate or helpful. CBT teaches us the skills to identify our feelings and thoughts, and connect them to destructive behavior patterns. When we have the whole picture, it becomes easier to change our perceptions, and in turn our experiences.
Most of us have goals or values that take work. Sometimes the work feels frightening or painful, leading to avoidance. It's natural to wish to avoid pain, but that can create more problems for us long-term. In order to have a life worth living, we must confront our fears. In a safe environment and with incremental steps, exposure to our fears can reduce discomfort and avoidance over time.
I view therapy as a voyage of discovery, with you as the captain. My role is to support you, as you navigate the sometimes tempestuous seas of life. The outcome of your treatment depends largely on your willingness to engage in the therapeutic process. I can promise to support you and do my very best to understand you and the patterns that show up in your life, as well as to help you clarify what it is that you want for yourself.
I address anxiety from a "Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy" perspective, which views symptoms such as anxiety as issues of "over-control." I'll help you identify unconscious patterns in your thinking and behavior that may not be serving you, and we will practice skills to overcome these barriers. I will also weave in Exposure Therapy as needed, to help you reach your goals and live a life of value.
