Women often face challenges that are unique to their gender, such as sexism, stereotyping, motherhood, childbirth issues, and infertility struggles. Many women struggle with gender roles and may feel pressured to balance a career and family. Other women seek help with parenting and marriage difficulties. Whether you need help navigating family relationships or coping with life’s challenges, I am here to help you live a rewarding, successful and joyful life.

Just like you, children and teens experience a range of emotions: joy, frustration, anger, grief, sadness, insecurity and more. The environment surrounding the child has an impact on these emotions: parent’s fighting, separation and/or divorce, loss of a loved one, bullying or school issues, dating, peer issues and so on. Unlike adults, kids often lack the basic coping skills and emotional vocabulary necessary to deal with these challenges in a healthy manner.

Trauma can take many forms whether it be: witnessing/experiencing domestic violence, sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, community violence or tragic loss of a loved one- to name a few. For many, the end result is flashbacks, nightmares, dissociation, irritability, low-self-esteem and feeling disconnected from yourself and those around you. CBT places an emphasis on helping individuals learn to be their own therapists. Through exercises in the session as well as “homework” exercises outside of sessions, patients/clients are helped to develop coping skills, whereby they can learn to change their own thinking, problematic emotions and behavior.

Recovery is the primary goal for people who have experienced trauma. By recovery we do not mean no longer having any effects form the traumatic experiences that have happened. Recovery means that one is no longer overwhelmed by the thoughts and feelings associated with past events and is able to live in the present moment. There are different schools of thought on how one gets to recovery and on discussing traumatic events of the past. It will be a personal choice for each individual client.

EMDR Therapy is a progressive psychotherapy tool used to enable people to heal from past trauma. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma, similar to how to the body heals from an injury. EMDR therapy that it is now recognized as an effective form of treatment for trauma and other disturbing experiences by organizations such as the American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organization and the Department of Veterans Affairs.
