Sometimes we direct our anger outward and sometimes we direct it towards ourselves. Anger can look aggressive but it can also look like sadness. I approach anger manager using cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). The goal is to slow the process down and start to identify the thoughts and emotions that trigger the anger. Along with this examination of thoughts and feelings, we will discuss and attempt to implement coping skills and behavioral alternatives to acting out or acting in behaviors.

CBT theorizes that we behave based on the ways we think and feel. We can slow down and take a hard look at our thinking patterns in order to recognize in what ways our thoughts may cause us harm and thus create painful feelings and/or distressing actions. In this life we spend more time talking/thinking to ourselves than we spend time talking with anyone else and often we spend that time being far more cruel and judgmental with ourselves than we would ever be with other people. Narrative Therapy seeks to listen and respect every person in the room as an equal. You are the expert in your life and the hero in your own story. I am trained in and offer trauma focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), an evidence-based model specifically designed for children and adolescents impacted by trauma. For adults, I do a modified version of TF-CBT that heavily focuses on narrative therapy and making meaning out of past experiences.

I am trained in and primarily use emotionally focused therapy (EFT) with couples. EFT therapy focuses on identifying the damaging patterns that couples get into, digging beneath the destructive behaviors and figuring out what our partners are really saying. EFT encourages honestly and vulnerability; it is through sharing with each other that you will come to know what each other’s raw spots are and find a way to speak to each other that pulls you closer rather than pushing you apart.
