About My Clients

The individuals who show up in my office aren’t here because they just want somewhere to vent about their week. They’re here because they want to experience lasting change in their lives, and are committed to the process. From the very beginning, I assume that my clients have the capacity to thrive and live rich, meaningful lives, even in the face of adversity.

My Background and Approach

My approach to therapy is relational, non-judgemental, collaborative, and engaged. I'm not simply curious about what my clients want to experience less of (i.e., anxiety, depression, conflict), I also hope to discover what they want to see more of (i.e. connection, resilience, meaning, to name a few…), and what makes them truly feel alive. My lens is systemic -- I look at how we affect and are affected by the systems we function within: our close relationships, families, the socio-political climate, the natural world, and especially our relationship with ourselves. I am trained in EMDR and Somatic Experiencing and find them to be gentle but effective ways of working with trauma and other past hurt. I also enjoy helping clients learn how our nervous systems operate, how that affects emotional and interpersonal well-being, as well as how to interrupt habitual stress responses before we get derailed by them.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I believe that connectedness is a biological imperative (i.e., that it's critical for our well-being). We thrive when we’re seen, heard, and taken seriously, and we suffer when that experience is missing, disrupted or thwarted. I believe that the capacity for resilience is inherent in all of us, and that my clients are much more capable and complex than just the symptoms that brought them to my office. And I believe in the power of somatic therapies to help us move gently and humanely through old trauma. Somatic therapies engage body awareness as part of the therapeutic process and address the connections between the body, the mind, and behavior. Talk therapy often prioritizes the mind’s role in influencing psychological health, however, better ideas don’t always change our experience of traumatic experiences or current challenges. Somatic work also includes knowledge of the basic functions of the nervous system to support the therapeutic process and expand resilience.
