About My Clients

Providing a safe and affirming experience for LGBTQ+ individuals to explore identity, transition, and manage day-to-day life. I have been working primarily with transgender adults since I started doing private practice in 2014. My experience has taught me about the many challenges faced by transgender people in our society. I find it very meaningful, providing support to people who seek to live boldly and authentically, despite these challenges.

My Background and Approach

I use a collaborative approach because I firmly believe that you are the expert on what is important to you, what works for you, and how you think and feel. I see myself as a consultant in your personal growth. We will explore what is important to you, what options are available, and what solutions fit best for you. Clients have said they appreciate the active approach I take, teaching skills and providing workbook chapters and handouts as needed. In individual therapy, I gravitate towards existential, ACT, and DBT-informed therapy. For group therapy, I use those as well as psychodynamic therapy, because interpersonal issues that started in clients' families of origin seem to crop up in group a lot. I offer two groups currently-- Gender Affirmative Therapy Group for trans adults Tuesdays 6-7:30 April 20-July 20, 2021, and Unapologetic Therapy Group for LGBTQ+ adults Mondays 1-2:30 April 12-July 19, 2021. (See aqua "Group" button above for details.)

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I am passionate about supporting and growing in my own understanding of people who are marginalized. I believe that access to mental health care is important, which is why I choose to accept insurance. I am a Christian, AND I have the utmost respect for other religions and for your spiritual or non-spiritual path, whatever that may mean for you. Many clients want to know how I identify, so I'll tell you. I am cisgender and straight. And let me guess your next question -- how did I get into working with LGBTQ+ clients? I loved leading therapy groups, and I had already been thinking of getting involved in an LGBTQ+ ministry at my church, so I couldn't believe it when a previous job actually asked ME to lead an LGBTQ+ therapy group! I found that I really connected with the group members but had a lot to learn, so I went to trainings, read lots of information, and participated in an online consultation group. And I'm still learning because every LGBTQ+ person I meet is unique!
