About My Clients

I work with folks who struggle with anxiety, depression, perfectionism, and other issues. Many have concerns about how they show up in significant relationships or have struggled to get their needs met in satisfying ways. Together we will look intensively at the historic roots of problems, making connections into the ways that old solutions have been perpetuated in the present and exploring possibilities for new and more satisfying ways of being.

My Background and Approach

I have over ten years of experience working in residential and community-based settings mental health settings. As a therapist, I draw primarily from psychoanalytic and existential perspectives as I think about people and the difficulties we face. In my experience, early relationships and significant events can lay down a template for what we expect life to be like and the kinds of choices and responses available to us. My approach is to listen with you for the deeper underlying story of how your life and patterns of being have developed. By exploring your history and the context in which the issues first emerged, together we will uncover the unconscious conflicts that have kept you stuck, create greater understanding and appreciation for the adaptations you have developed, and explore new options for solutions that better reflect who you are.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I believe that each human being is unique and needs to be honored and understood as an individual. At the same time, we each exist and develop within a cultural and relational context that shapes our view of who we are, what we can expect from our significant relationships, and the kinds of choices that are possible for us to make. The experience of feeling deeply understood by an empathic other and being allowed to feel previously unfelt emotions can help lead to connections and insights into the ways that old, problematic solutions get perpetuated in the present. This can open up space for new possibilities to emerge for better and more affirming ways of thinking and being in the world. True change can be a slow and challenging process, but the journey toward growth and self-understanding is one of the most satisfying and rewarding endeavors we can undertake.
