I’m autistic, but I didn’t know it for most of my life. My name is Karl, and I’m a geek therapist.

People in your life don’t seem to understand: You’ve tried to just “power through,” trying to keep up with the expectations, until you suddenly realized that you’re exhausted and need to escape to your room to isolate for hours, days or weeks on end—but you still don’t know why.
You feel like you’re slightly out of sync with most people. You take things too literally. You always make movie references, but no one ever knows what you’re talking about. You shut down when you’re overwhelmed and you’ve been told that means you have depression—but you aren’t sure that’s right. One minute you’re in control of your emotions, and the next you’re lashing out at others. You don’t understand why you’re so overwhelmed. Sound as familiar as your lucky D20? You may be autistic.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences. I use an online service to provide either visual or auditory bi-lateral stimulation (you will watch a dot move left to right or hear beeps over a headset going left to right) as part of the EMDR process.
Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) provides clients with new skills to manage painful emotions and decrease conflict in relationships. DBT specifically focuses on providing therapeutic skills in four key areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. I help people learn these skills in order to improve their lives.
The idea behind person-centered therapy is that the client is the expert on their lived experience. You alone know what you have been through and your experiences with those events. As such I make sure to listen to your experiences and validate what you have been through, while also making sure our work focuses on what you want and not what others want you to be.
