My Background and Approach

Karla Gomez-Estrada (she,her, hers) is a postdoctoral fellow supervised by Dr. Wendy Bates of Dallas Therapy Associates. She received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology (PsyD) from an APA accredited program at Carlos Albizu University in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Dr. Gomez-Estrada is committed to provide the highest-quality care to diverse populations. She has trained in multiple settings including community mental health clinics, residential programs, detox centers, and correctional settings among others. Her pre-doctoral internship took place at the Los Angeles County Internship in Corrections where she offered services to patients from different backgrounds involved in the legal system. Dr. Gomez-Estrada has experience with forensic and psychodiagnostic assessments. Her areas of interest include personality disorders, emotional dysregulation, substance use, forensic assessments and mood disorders.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

Dr. Gomez-Estrada provides a warm, non-judgemental and safe environment for participants to heal, be vulnerable, and explore their thoughts and emotions. She utilizes the bio-social theory to help participants gain insight about who they are and their behaviors. After a detailed assessment of her client’s needs, Dr. Gomez-Estrada will present the available evidence-based treatments options to help her clients navigate their life challenges effectively. Dr. Gomez-Estrada has experience providing EBP treatments such as: Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, among others. She tailors every approach to provide an individualized and culturally-sensitive treatment. For her, therapy is a collaborative and reciprocal process where both parties learn and grow from their interaction. “It’s like two people in the same kayak...to get to their destination they have to trust, communicate and paddle together”.
