Kelly Cavanaugh

Much of my work has been focused on helping teens and adults recover and grow from past trauma. I have worked in a teenage group home setting with girls with complex behavioral problems, as well as spent the last year specializing in domestic violence counseling.

My interest in mental health began when I was working as a program coordinator and presenter for a teenage suicide prevention program. I spent ten years educating teenagers on the importance of mental health and reducing the stigma surrounding treatment. I also help teenagers overcome family conflict, depression, and school stress.

Both abuse and being a teenager involve significant transitions in a person's life. I provide support, motivation, and guidance in helping the person feel more competent and function to their best ability despite life's challenges.

EMDR therapy can help identify and address any life experience that has been inadequately processed and is dysfunctionally held in memory networks. EMDR works by desensitizing the client to any disturbances and helping them reprocess them in more adaptive ways. I am undergoing consultation and will be fully trained in March 2023.

CBT is heavily focused on the connection between thoughts-feelings-behaviors. Through an experiential approach, I help draw awareness to thoughts/feelings surrounding both past and present disturbances and helping to relieve the distress they cause. People often report finding balance, feeling safer to access their feelings, and act in more adaptive, self-serving ways. I was trained in TFCBT in 2015.

EFT helps couples identify their problematic “dance” and help them reconnect by in a healthy way by addressing each partner’s needs. I was trained in EFT in 2015.
