The idea behind CBT is that it is the perception of the event (or the way that you see it) is what causes the problem. In doing CBT, we change the thought process to change the outcome of a situation (the behavior). This therapy is focused on the present and is more geared toward solving problems. It looks at unhelpful thinking and teaches skills that can be used to modify thoughts and behaviors.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) revolves around an eight-phase model in which you focus on a memory that is disturbing to you and process the event. During processing, you watch the therapist's hand as it goes back and forth, similar to a REM cycle. After processing is complete, the memory that you bothered you is thought and felt differently than before. EMDR often takes less time than traditional talk therapy.
