Codependency is a BEAST! You might think of codependency as something that might only be impacting your romantic relationships, or just your relationships - BUT, codependency is really crafty! What I see in many of my clients is how much codependent behaviors interfere in everything from their romantic relationships, their parenting behaviors, self-esteem and self-worth, to their lack of confidence in their career/workplace, and in their mood regulation.
For me, the personal is political. I believe my work as a therapist is to create a space where there is safety in processing and making sense of all of the micro-and macroaggressions that get in the way of the pursuit of peace and joy. If you believe we are all one human race, and you don't see color - we are probably NOT a good fit!
Whether you are switching jobs, ending a relationship, or stepping into parenthood, life transitions can often cause unresolved challenges to resurface. I believe in navigating these transitions we are offered the opportunity to develop a deeper more integrated sense of self, and reprioritize our values and clarify our beliefs about ourselves and our world.
Im going to ask about your family, and your childhood. I believe it's an important part of building the framework for our work together. Its important for me to know who cared for you? Or didn't. What were you told about yourself? With whom did you feel safe? and any significant events that have influenced who you are today. Don't worry, its not what you need to talk about EVERY session - but in the beginning, this is how we start.
We all need more mindfulness. I tend to use these skills as a way to deepen your mind-body connection and physiological awareness. What does anger feel like in your body? What does a trauma trigger feel like in your body? What are your fight or flight responses? Knowing how your body activates can better help you self-soothe and ground yourself when facing emotional distress.
Navigating, coping with, and making sense of our deepest most painful experiences is part of our journey as humans on this earth. Whether you've identified your trauma, worked through it or are not quite sure if you have experienced something traumatic (you definitely HAVE) - I can help you explore all of that and figure out what it means, what to do, what NOT to do, and how to move forward.
