Hi, I'm Mia, A systemically-trained therapist who is passionate about queerness, accessibility, and creating safe, healing spaces for all.
Marriage and Family Therapist Associate in Oak Park, IL
Supervised by Elana Thomas, LCSW
As a relationally-trained therapist, I specialize in working with clients by using a systemic perspective. This means that we will explore a client’s relationship to themselves, to others, and to society as a whole.
I use Narrative Therapy to learn about the stories that a client tells about their life. Throughout the therapeutic process, we will "thicken the narrative" and discuss the ways that we may "re-story" our lives.
I use a culturally sensitive lens to allow clients to be the experts in their own lives, as coming from a place of non-judgement and understanding.
I often work with clients to better understand their partner(s) wants and needs, especially as they arise in relation to open relationships and polyamory. I have worked with clients during all stages of the "opening up" process and with multiple types of open relationships (swinging, polyamory, and open relationships).
When working with kinky clients, I have often discussed power dynamics, boundaries, safety, and consent, all while connecting to larger social and emotional themes that have arisen in the therapeutic process.
When discussing LGBTQIA+/queer issues, I have sometimes leaned on my own queer identity to better understand clients' experiences, while still leaving space for the client to own their truth and share their experiences freely.
