Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is an effective evidenced-based treatment model that works by gradually exposing you to your fears which leads to your fear response reducing over time, also know as habituation. ERP works by overriding an overactive amygdala, which is the part of our brain that processes emotions and memories associated with fear. Your willingness to experience discomfort and uncertainty can help in weakening the grip OCD has over your life.
Mindfulness-based therapy, you will learn to adjust your perspective to thoughts, feelings and physical sensations. Mindfulness will encourage you to lower your resistance to symptoms through non-judgemental acceptance. You've probably experienced that resisting your thoughts and feelings often intensified them. With mindfulness-based therapy, you will learn to use acceptance to create room for your thoughts and feelings, rather than pushing them away or avoiding them.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an action-oriented treatment approach wherein clients learn to stop avoiding and denying inner emotions, and instead helps them accept that these feelings are appropriate responses to certain situations that should not prevent them from leading a meaningful life. ACT helps people accept their issues and hardships and commit to making necessary changes to their behavior. ACT has been effectively used to treat OCD, anxiety, stress and depression.
I have been trained by leading experts on the treatment of OCD and OC spectrum disorders, including Social Anxiety, Health Anxiety, Panic Disorder and Specific Phobias. I utilize ERP which is the leading modality in treating such conditions. If you have been plagued by intrusive and unwanted thoughts and have engaged in compulsions, such as reassurance seeking, repetitive checking, or avoidance behaviors, I encourage you to reach out to me to discuss how ERP might be useful to you.
