About My Clients
My clients are individuals or families (not currently couples) experiencing transitions. I enjoy working with people of all genders, sexual orientations, and relationship styles. Many of my clients are navigating open relationships (Consensual Non-Monogamy) or exploring their gender identity and expression. I have both personal and professional experience in both of these areas, and I'll work collaboratively with you to support you reaching your goals.
My Background and Approach
I'm very interested in the strengths, knowledge, and expertise you bring to our process, and I'll bring my own strengths and knowledge, gleaned from both lived and professional experience. My background in developmental psychology, and my experience as an educator and a parent, have helped me to have a developmental perspective: Across our lifespans, we are always growing and changing, and every stage of development is important! We are individuals who live, love, and learn in relation to others - our families and our wider social and cultural context. It can be helpful to examine the messages that our culture gives us about what is and isn't acceptable, and decide for ourselves if those messages "fit" us or not. Along those lines, I'm sex positive, meaning that I work to create a space in which clients can explore and learn about their sexuality and gender without judgment or shame. I support clients in challenging cultural norms around sexuality, gender, and relationship style.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
Before I became a therapist, I grew up in multiply-blended families; was married monogamously for twenty-five years; raised three now-adult children; and was transitioning to polyamory. I know from personal experience how identity shifts and transitions around gender, sexuality, and relationship style affect everyone in a family, and provide both challenges and exceptional growth opportunities. It is my passion to help folks navigate these transitions in empowered and empowering ways. That is what brought me to this work, and sustains me in it.
