About My Clients

I specialize in working with queer & trans folks around various topics, including codependency & relationship issues, identity development, such as coming out or transitioning, chronic shame, anxiety, depression, addictive patterns, personal transformation, & spiritual development. Identity may not be the focus of our work together, but it is always the background out of which our experience arises. I therefore hold a social justice lens to support deeper understanding and self-compassion.

My Background and Approach

Contemplative psychotherapy is a mindfulness-based approach that uses present-moment awareness to explore solidified beliefs about ourselves and the world, and how those beliefs prevent us from living an authentic and open life. By moving toward our so-called "issues" we become more intimate and familiar with them. It’s a process of becoming friends with, rather than getting rid of. Our work together is not me being the expert on your situation and giving you the answers which you are lacking. It is a process of collaborating and uncovering together the strengths and resources that are already available to you. I have experience working in residential addiction treatment centers, transitional living programs for young adults, human rights organizations working with survivors of interpersonal and institutional violence, and in private practice. In addition, I also work as a meditation instructor, teach mindfulness to teens, and create accessible guided meditations (raylewey.com).

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

Although my own personal journey in therapy transformed my life and significantly decreased my suffering, it was the path of meditation which allowed me to fully accept myself and to come out as transgender. For me, the blend of mindful awareness with the relational framework of psychotherapy creates the perfect conditions for deep healing and transformation. I also believe in our interconnectedness, and that we are all harmed by systems of oppression, even when we seemingly benefit from them. Therefore, I feel passionate about and committed to engaging in anti-oppression work, both internally and externally.
