Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) tries to identify and change negative thinking patterns and pushes for positive behavioral changes. CBT helps in significant improvement in functioning and quality of life by: Learning to recognize one’s distortions in thinking, reevaluate them in light of reality, gaining a better understanding of the behavior and using problem-solving skills to cope with difficult situations.
DBT focuses on accepting your experiences as a way to reassure those experiences and finding balance by discovering the work needed to change negative behaviors. DBT focuses on four ways to enhance life skills: distress tolerance, emotion regulation, mindfulness, and interpersonal effectiveness. Stages of therapy include treat the most self-destructive behavior (suicide ideation), address quality-of-life skills, focus on improved relationships and self-esteem, promote healthy mental health.
