Sexual exploitation, abuse, and assault are all terrible experiences that take away something that humans value very highly: our autonomy. Having something so important to us violently or coercively stolen is a traumatic experience that needs special attention and care. I have previously worked with Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners and I have been a Texas Association Against Sexual Assault survivor's advocate since 2015. Self-Harm is a symptom of a deep pain from within us that we're just trying to escape in some way or another. I personally believe that self harm can be its own kind of addiction. Much like with substance abuse, in order to address it, I like to create immediate de-escalation and harm reduction techniques, and then move inward to address the underlying cause.

I come from a behavioral background, and still truly believe in the basic tenant of "we do things because we get something out of it." Human beings are amazingly complex, and at the end of the day, we still somehow go back to what is comfortable for us. CBT is about addressing those behaviors that are "comfortable" but are somehow negatively affecting us, and using our own cognition to combat irrational and distorted thinking.
