About My Clients
I enjoy working with people who may be navigating transitions, exploring their identities, and looking to understand themselves in the contexts of the world & relationships we live within. In therapy, I also invite exploration of how systems of power have shaped our values and lived experiences as you envision your hopes for the future. **Please visit canopymhc.com/therapists/alex-subbaraman to request an appointment**
My Background and Approach
I have practiced in a variety of settings such as hospitals, schools, and reproductive health centers. My passion for this work originates from my lived experiences as a mixed race, first-generation woman. My therapeutic approach is deeply relational, guided by the belief that healing is only as fruitful as the trust between those involved. I focus on understanding how our stories can nourish experiences of connection. I also center diverse concepts of attachment, development, and liberation in exploring how and why we show up in certain ways with ourselves and others. In addition to centering your wisdom in the therapeutic process, I have advanced training in Somatic-focused and complex trauma treatment interventions and can pull from many approaches to meet your needs.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that individual healing and collective liberation go hand-in-hand, which is why I'm passionate about investigating how systems of power function & impact us. In therapy, I invite exploration of how these systems have shaped our values and lived experiences as we envision your hopes for the future. I understand (& have experienced) the immense harm that paradigms of White/Western Psychology cause. I am committed to earning your trust, fielding all your questions/concerns, and leaning into systemic criticism as we work to fortify your innate capacities for growth & connection. Outside of work, I strive to show up as authentically & playfully as I can with my friends & family. I grew up in Michigan, the United Kingdom, and India (where my family lives). I enjoy playing video games, cooking South Indian foods of my childhood, and making music in addition to prioritizing rest & recovery in all areas of life.
