About My Clients
When getting to know new clients, I come with an attitude of curiosity, empathy and unconditional positive regard. I specialize in childhood trauma and church hurt. As a former member of a high-demand religion, I know how difficult the deconstruction process can be. I'm a member of the LGBTQ+ community and offer an inclusive, safe and accepting space. My practice is also sex-positive, gender-affirming and anti-racist.
My Background and Approach
My name is Alissa Madsen and I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. I have a Master of Social Work from Texas State University. Having lived in Central Texas for 10 years, I’m proud to call it my home. Social work is my second career, but the skills of patience and determination I learned prior to making this transition have been invaluable. As a professional musician in my past life, I am familiar with perfectionism and the drive for excellence. Further, as a single parent for more than 10 years, I know what it's like to feel isolated and alone. I have previously worked at various nursing facilities in the Austin area, where I learned about different chronic illnesses. I also worked at Austin State Hospital where I supported individuals struggling with addiction and severe mental illness. Most recently, I was employed with Hospice Austin where I supported individuals and family members facing terminal prognoses.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I'm a member of the queer community and practice from a social justice lens. I volunteer with a local nonprofit for senior citizens. When I’m not working, I like to hike, watch British crime shows, and spend time in nature. I’m currently learning Tai Kwon Do. I am proudly owned by two cats.
