Trauma puts up roadblocks to connection, impacts our view of the world. Adoption starts with a trauma but doesn’t have to end there.
Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in Henrico, VA
I have studied trauma for over 10 years. I am trained in EMDR, TF - CBT, Theraplay and a Certified Trauma Assessor and Practitioner. I work from a regulation model informed by the Polyvagal Theory, Dr. Bruce Perry’s teaching and my play therapy training helps me use play as a vehicle for expression and integration of past experiences and their impact on our view of ourselves, others and the world.
Attachment theory helps us understand how our early experiences of being cared for inform our view of the world as being safe or unsafe; ourselves as valuable or not. It impacts our lives from in utero until death. Even though we all have attachment needs adoption can create insecurity and lack of trust in others and ourselves being constantly afraid of being “unchosen” and expecting the world to get turned upside down at any moment.
Attachment and trauma are part of adoption yet adoption issues relate more to the impact of adoption itself on identity, self worth, loss and often a journey to connect to your origin story, your first chapter. Each adoptees journey is unique but can also share similar feelings and challenges. These are often not talked about or allowed in an adoptees world. Adoptive parents bring their own histories into parenting and it can be challenging and they can face judgment and unrealistic expectations
We use models that align with the neuroscience that explains the impact of trauma on the brain, body, self and relationships. We have therapists trained in EMDR, Safe and Sound Protocol, SMART Model, Trauma informed Play Therapy, Synergetic Play Therapy and more. Single traumas, developmental trauma, adoption and more are all understood here.
