By assessing your patterns and behaviors of substance use, together we can establish the difference between abuse and dependence, as in this example, some folks define alcohol abuse as " too much, too often" and dependency as "establishing a drinking pattern that interferes with life functions". It's important for me to help you identify difficulties with functioning with and without substances, uncovering destructive behaviors can lead the way towards discovering the many paths to healing.
Codependent can be tricky to show itself and understand. I've defined it as someone who is addicted to folks in their life that are addicted to substances. Codependent have found ways to organize themselves around other people, placing themselves at a much lower priority on their own needs. And that can be very hard to admit and it takes time to explore and trust the process of exploration. Through assessment, psycho-education, handout, media, together the journey to healing can start.

In therapy, the client is the expert, and can show this therapist how you have discovered way to organize your life around substances and "function". As your therapist, I will use measurement tools, handouts, and listen to your narrative that has been created by 'coping strategies" as a way to create new strategies on the road towards healing.

Motivational interviewing (MI) is a person-centered strategy. It is used to elicit client motivation to change a specific negative behavior. MI engages clients, elicits change talk and evokes patient motivation to make positive changes. It can also be used to explore discrepancies that interfere with progress with making change.
