About My Clients
Many of us reach out when we feel the need for support, or help working through challenging times. Sometimes we face challenges we think are too difficult to manage alone. I believe in taking a strength-based, client-centered approach to psychotherapy, working with you to help you grow toward your best self. The familiar ways you have of dealing with life's complications may not be working; together we can work to identify new positive means of change.
My Background and Approach
I am a National Board-Certified Counselor (NCC) and Board-Certified TeleMental Health Practititioner (BC-TMH). I work with people seeking personal insight, relief from anxiety or depression, and a variety of mental health concerns. I also work with couples and other relationships. I have many years of experience with the LGBTQ+ community, and work as part of an interdisciplinary Gender Team to provide services for trans, genderqueer, non-binary, and gender non-conforming clients as well as others. I often present on topics of cultural humility, gender, and others. My therapy style is integrative, working with each client to create a treatment plan that fits their specific needs. Generally, I combine psychodynamic work with a strong client-centered/person-centered (Rogerian) orientation. I have experience with CBT and ACT techniques, work with substance use issues from a harm-reduction perspective. I also incorporate elements of narrative, feminist, and interpersonal therapy.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
It is important to me that everyone has access to mental health services, which is why much of my time is spent working at a community mental health clinic serving traditionally under-resourced populations. I reserve a limited number of low-fee appointments, and work with other agencies and services to refer clients who may not be able to afford private therapy. I serve as Treasurer on the Board of Directors of Gaylesta, the Psychotherapist Association for Gender and Sexual Diversity (www.gaylesta.org).
