About My Clients
Does the idea of a therapist judging you, your story or your interests keep you from getting the support you desire? Do you wonder if you are normal? Are you experiencing anxiety and depression because of your interests and desires? I know the feeling of not knowing if someone is safe to talk to -- or if it will take too long to explain the background of your issue to a wide-eyed therapist. You can spend more time on the issues at hand instead of educating me.
My Background and Approach
I have worked with adults with chronic psychiatric diagnoses and teenagers in both residential treatment and inpatient hospital settings. My approach to counseling is that the client doesn't need "fixing" but rather to learn and practice tools that help cope with their life challenges. These challenges are also likely barriers to making and achieving goals, so a main focus of my counseling is checking in with you on what results you would like to see and making a clear, attainable plan on how to achieve these results. Two areas of the human condition I particularly like to focus on are shame and guilt. Shame is often learned from the environment and molded with our values and perceptions of our selves from a young age. I love to explore the sources of shame, tease it out from healthy and unhealthy guilt and discuss the areas of an individual's life shame may be affecting, especially sexual orientation, gender and intimacy/sex.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
My specialties include serving the LGBTQ+ population, kinky/polyamorous individuals and adolescents who are facing immense change and life transition. I believe that counseling should be non-judgmental and safe to explore topics from the taboo to the mundane. I participate in social movements such as the Women's March and Slutwalk to empower people of all genders to be free of stigma and ban together against victim blaming and rape culture. I have written extensively about consent, sexual health, sex-positivity, healthy relationships, kink and sexual empowerment. In my free time, I love to hike, backpack, mountain bike, do yoga, read, paint and play with my large cat, Murphy.
