About My Clients
When you need help getting in shape, you can head to the gym and work with a coach. Similarly, when life becomes overwhelming, you can reach out to a counselor. Are you reliving your pain on a daily basis? Do you feel lost or disconnected, like life is meaningless? I believe these feelings are normal: PTSD is a normal response to abnormal events. If you've been hurt, you have a right to feel sad or angry--even betrayed. You are not alone.
My Background and Approach
My goal for therapy is to help you become the author of your life. If you are feeling stuck or trapped by grief, traumatic experiences, shame, guilt, moral injury, or substance abuse, I want you to find a path forward. I use a mix of analytical and creative therapies to identify and heal the traumas that are consuming you. In sessions, we’ll engage in narrative therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, art therapy, and creative writing. I am also trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), an evidenced based treatment for trauma. In the short term, I will work with you to improve your day-to-day functioning. In the longer term, I would be honored to help you find acceptance, meaning, and purpose.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I have worked with survivors of childhood abuse, sexual trauma, and military-related trauma. I started studying trauma treatment because I believe we have a duty to help veterans who served overseas. For ten years, I worked as a civilian supporting the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Wanting to provide better support to the deployed forces, I volunteered to deploy to Camp Victory, Iraq, where I analyzed efforts to counter improvised explosive devices (IEDs). I also spent 14 months at Camp Leatherneck in Helmand, Afghanistan, helping the Marines assess their operations and making recommendations to improve pre-deployment training. These experiences gave me a window into the readjustment difficulties facing military personnel and families. They also inspired my mid-career transition into mental health counseling. I am taking new clients. If you'd like to see how I could help you, please send me an e-mail and we'll schedule a time to talk. I offer free 20-minute consultations.
