In my experience working with a variety of clients, a recurring undertone is that of the influence of trauma. Trauma can look different, from an acute experience to complex or developmental trauma that builds over a person's life. I have training in working with trauma from childhood into adult life, and I am certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (children/adolescence). The very cool thing about trauma is that it is not permanent and there is potential for growth!
Vicarious trauma is a real thing. First responders, helping professionals and caregivers are susceptible to trauma and burnout. I have worked with those who have experienced this, as a wellness coordinator for mental health professionals. Using a positive psychology framework, I assist clients in gaining a sense of meaning, establishing healthy boundaries and enhancing positive emotions.
Adolescence is a weird time. The kid is confused. The parents are at a loss. I have training in working with families and adolescents. As the brain is going through changes, it's helpful to provide education on those changes to normalize the process. I work in bridging the gap when there is a communication problem between adolescents and their family. I am certificated in TF-CBT (trauma work with adolescents) and have extensive experience working as a school-based mental health therapist.
I am a Registered Play Therapist. While play therapy is often used with children and adolescents, I believe that adults can benefit from a playful approach as well. Play isn't limited to toys or games. Play can involve expressive arts, imaginative exercises -play can be an attitude toward life. I hold a Child-Centered Approach (or client-centered with adults) that the child has the ability to reach his/her potential and as a therapist, I hold a safe space for the client to explore and grow.
I am certified in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, which is an effective treatment to use with children and adolescents. I have worked with adults who have Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) or other difficulties due to a history of complex trauma. I tend to use a strengths-based approach in helping the client develop positive emotions and personal strategies to cushion themselves when they delve into trauma work.
Narrative Therapy is my go-to. I believe in the power of story. In Native American culture, healing circles exist where people share stories as medicine. If we view our problems as stories rather than an extension of ourselves, it's easier to rewrite the story in a more positive light than to feel like something is wrong with us. There is healing in owning your story and sharing it. We don't erase parts of the story but view them in a more positive lens to help gain a direction moving forward.
Why merely survive when you can thrive? People typically seek therapy during a time of suffering. At this point, survival is the goal. Once you get there however, don't stop at merely surviving. I like to use a positive psychology approach to help individuals seeking a life that is flourishing and meaningful. We will look at your strengths, your passions, interests and supports and I can help you design a plan for how to live life to the fullest, experience growth and thrive where you are.
Adolescence is hard, to say the very least. It can be difficult to navigate firsthand, as well as from the parent/caregiver trying to support them. I have worked predominantly with adolescents for over 5 years, and the thing I've learned is that we don't need to have all the right answers to be helpful to the teen, but we do need to hear them out. I use pop culture, video games, media, and whatever the client is interested in to step into their experience and meet them where they are-and listen.
