Christine MacInnis, MA, MS, LMFT Certified Affirmative LGBTQIA Therapist (AAMFT) I want to help you overcome life's challenges
Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in Torrance, CA
Our thoughts contain a lot of the answers to our problems. So often we are trapped in negative patterns of thinking that hold us back from achieving growth. And often these negative thoughts, lead to unproductive behaviors. Using a very directive approach and challenging of these negative patterns, we together can find the solutions to issues related to anxiety, depression, bipolar and other mood disorders.
If one person in a system is unhealthy, then the whole system is as well. I never work with family members in a vacuum. Rather I encourage clients to include family members in the sessions to work on issues that are occurring and to help support growth. This is especially helpful if the client is a teen who needs the support of their entire family to improve.
There is so much to be learned by what we say and don't say. By asking you the right questions to why your life is not working for you, you can uncover common patterns that are causing you distress.
As a school counselor for over 25 years in addition to being a therapist, I feel I bring a unique understanding to the issues teens and young adults bring to my office. And currently working in a school environment, I know the challenges they are facing. I love helping them to solve their life problems by teaching them effective ways to handling them.
Living in today's world, our teens and young adults have not been taught helpful coping skills, problem solving skills and how to deal with a healthy level of stress in their lives. This has results in an epidemic of anxiety disorders in our young people. Our world is more complicated and we need need to learn the tools to handle it effectively. I use a very directive, cognitive behavioral approach to dealing with anxiety and helping my clients overcome it.
Working with gender expansive clients is a true passion of mine. I am trained and certified as an Affirmative LGBTQ Therapist and currently 70% of my practice is working with clients of all ages as they deal with gender identity questioning, family concerns, medical transitioning, and living in a culture that is still learning to understand gender diversity. I am a staunch ally and also volunteer my time with my local PFLAG chapter and other local LGBTQIA support groups.
