Trauma happens when we experience an event that feels or is life-threatening or exceeds our coping abilities. Our bodies get "stuck" in a setting that tells us danger is all around and this can lead to anxiety, depression, flashbacks, being highly reactive, feelings of numbness and more. The great news is that there are many ways to address trauma within the safe space of the therapeutic relationship. Trauma can be a single event or many events and is not always something obvious.
Parenting is a noble journey but it is not an easy one. Parenting when you have experienced trauma can make it feel nearly impossible. Helping parents connect with their children and teens in positive ways is something I find deeply gratifying. Making small changes in communication, understanding your child's temperament, and learning to respond rather than react can make major positive impacts!
I see children ages 5 and up as well as parents with younger children. Much of my professional experience has been working with children and teens who have experienced trauma, have high amount of conflict with parents, and have experienced suicidal thoughts.
