Warm, interactive clinician who uses a mix of skill building, insight and humor to address anxiety, identity and relationship concerns.
Psychologist in Washington, DC
I specialize in the treatment of anxiety, including generalized anxiety, panic attacks, behavioral manifestations such as hair pulling/skin picking and social anxiety. Please know that anxiety is very treatable. We will gain a better sense of your fears, strengthen your tools to recognize and challenge anxious thoughts and behaviors, and work towards building a life in which you feel calmer and more confident.
I treat the range of depression, whether you feel persistently low and perhaps do not know why, or if you feel sad and overwhelmed due to a recent trigger such as a loss or end of a romantic relationship, or perhaps you have experienced recurring depressive episodes over time. I use a mix of structured techniques to help improve your mood and broader insight-oriented exploration to better understand your triggers and path forward. (**I do not currently treat patients with suicidal ideation)
I have expertise in disordered eating, body image and self esteem, particularly binge eating, body dysmorphia, restricting and over-exercise. Our work is a mix of understanding and modifying behaviors while also exploring the personal, family, social and cultural influences that contributed to their development.
Psychodynamic theory is what you may think of when you imagine "talk therapy." It is a rich and nuanced exploration of who you are and the forces that shaped you. The psychodnymic aspects of our work help bring to light your unspoken, and perhaps unrecognized, assumptions about yourself and the world around you so you can decide if they serve your life now and the life you want going forward.
I use CBT techniques because they are clear, accessible and effective. CBT helps us to break down overwhelming emotions into manageable pieces, gaining a better understanding of the thoughts, feelings and behaviors that are contributing to your distress. From there, we can identify specific, manageable steps forward, reducing your negative emotions and building your confidence. As a type-A personality, this feels like my native language.
