About My Clients

If you struggle with feeling unworthy, have difficulty connecting with other people, feel unlovable, feel like you can never quite become good enough, then welcome. I am also experienced at working with trauma, hearing voices, older adults in life transition, complex bereavement, gender transition, bipolar disorder, domestic violence survivors, acculturation and migration experiences, major depression, and motivation issues.

My Background and Approach

I help to explore and build an understanding of how our early experiences inform how we feel about ourselves as adults, and use a wide variety of practical and interpersonal strategies in working alongside people to restore their self esteem and sense of worth. I am originally from New Zealand and have also practiced in Japan and England. In addition to my private practice I direct a mental health clinic, supervise and train psychotherapists, host a psychotherapy podcast, and teach trauma at a graduate social work school.

My Personal Beliefs and Interests

I practice under an anti-racist model with a strong analysis of systemic oppression including an intersectional model of systemic sexism, heterosexism, racism, abelism, transphobia, and other forms of oppression. I identify as Christian but am friendly to people of all faiths and have some working knowledge of Buddhism from graduate Japanese study and living in Japan for about five years. I am a cisgender White heterosexual Christian migrant male, and work to be open to recognizing that I have unconscious bias and encourage the people I work with to inform me when I unwittingly act out on this, but recognize that it is my work to educate myself. I believe in the inherent worth of each individual person and the ability of people to work toward their own definition of recovery given a supportive environment in which to do so. I believe in the importance of the therapist being vulnerable in this work and that the therapist is also on a journey of recovery alongside the client.
