Hello! My name is Jacob Meyer and I connect commpassionately with my clients to help them become free from the issues holding onto them.
Clinical Social Worker in Lakewood, CO
I have experience in working with clients suffering from severe trauma and PTSD from the beginning of my career working in addiction treatment. I am EMDR certified and I understand the full scope of distress that a traumatic background can cause along with the coping strategies that are used to survive this distress. I'm skilled in helping clients slowly but surely integrate the intense emotions that previous trauma causes. I'm here to help you to move through this at your own pace.
Working with clients suffering from addiction, disordered eating patterns, and those suffering from traumatic brain injuries has helped me gain relevant experience in helping clients move through depressive symptoms. Feeling trapped beneath the weight of depression can feel crushing and so often these symptoms point towards deeper issues to identify and work through. I'm here to help you identify and move through underlying symptoms in a kind and carying environment.
In having a diverse background of treatment anxiety has become a specialty of mine. Having our nervous system become stuck in flight mode can be so difficult for us to manage along with causing further issues in our life. So often Anxiety is tied to our lives and relationships leading us to unknowingly be threatened by feelings of shame. I'm skilled at helping clients manage their symptoms of anxiety with mindfulness based practices that helps our nervous system find the calm that they need.
Attachment theory is the evidence based framework for relational based counseling. I have been trained in this framework through my clinical supervisor and professional development. I understand and identify how your early attachments shape the rules of how your attention, acceptable emotions, and beliefs on your identity form and how compassionate experiences with me directly impacts changes in you. I'm here to help you as a helpful caregiver to facilitate your exploration of change.
From the beginning of my career I have always been based in psychodynamic therapy to help clients understand how the past can often invade our present lives. We so often get stuck in patterns within relationships and coping skills through our lives and therapy is a space to grow insight and awareness into these issues. Ultimately I'm here to follow the present and link it to the past only as its useful to you in your daily life and goals for change.
I have grown in this expertise through my career. Mindfulness based meditation and principles help us to develop the skills to enact changes found in sessions. Practicing these skills are vital to developing awareness, acceptance, self investigation, compassionate responses, and to develop higher tolerances for negative emotions. Mindfulness based practices truly allows us to grow stronger in the face of discomfort and it is my primary intervention due to its robust evidence for change.
