About My Clients
My clients tend to be individuals facing the prospect of adding a child to their family and/or struggling with this huge shift. The "normal" transition to parenthood is hard enough. Introduce fertility, surrogacy, adoption, traumatic birth, or a multitude of other issues, and it can feel insurmountable. No one should suffer if parenthood isn't necessarily how they expected it to be. I am passionate about supporting people as they navigate the world that may lead to changing their family.
My Background and Approach
I have worked as a clinician both here in the US, and also in South Africa, where I supported young women and families at both a street shelter and a children's hospital over a 3 year period. I've also worked in a residential setting with teenage boys, hospice, and in foster care/adoption. I was a postpartum and doula for many years, which led me into my passion of working in perinatal mental health. My most poignant experiences have always come when supporting new and expecting parents. The hopes, the joys, the fears, the heartbreak; these feelings tie us together, and are our humanity. My approach is strength-based, and a very cognitive behavioral style, helping clients connect with their own inner resources to make lasting change. In addition, I like to use a narrative therapy framework that can be key to understanding and processing traumatic events. Finally, I love to laugh with clients; humor can be a much needed point of relief!
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
As a perinatal mental health provider, I am passionate about continuing to listen, learn, and share about the crisis that birthing people are experiencing in this country, especially BIPOC. There is so much more we can do to direct support and advocate for change; I am dedicated to doing so with consistency. I try to be an active participant in anti-racist education. I hope to always amplify Black voices and other voices of color. Whether it be mothers, doctors, birth workers, lawmakers, or other stakeholders in the mental health and parenting world, these are the voices that need to be heard, and I am dedicated to sharing them.
