About My Clients
Are you struggling to find motivation or purpose? Is it hard getting out of bed in the morning some or most days? Do you feel like your life isn't where you had hoped it would be by now? You're not alone, and you've come to the right place. I empower burnt-out professionals and young adults to prioritize their long-term health and happiness and take concrete steps to reach their goals in life, work, and love.
My Background and Approach
I received my MA in counseling from St. Edward’s University and have provided career counseling at Texas State Career Services and psychotherapy at Capital Area Counseling. I have also received training from the Beck Institute for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy treating depression and anxiety, as well as basic training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) from Dr. Christie Sprowls, a board-certified instructor by EMDRIA. My approach is philosophical and collaborative – I find that many if not most mental health and emotional challenges are resolved by obtaining clarity on our core values, living in alignment with those values, and taking consistent, tangible steps towards our goals. Sometimes trauma and negative beliefs and memories can disrupt this process. In such instances, I leverage EMDR to empower my clients to calm and heal their nervous system, providing space for tangible action to generate positive momentum and an internalized sense of hope and mastery.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
My bachelor's degree was in political philosophy and history, and I love drawing upon these disciplines, as well as literature, movies, and TV references as helpful and appropriate to assist my clients in clarifying the meaning of their life's journey. I find that recognizing a similar trait or experience that we've had in the story of another helps us to feel less alone in what we might be going through, and capable in the face of whatever challenge we're encountering. As a gay man who grew up in a traditional and religious environment, I relate to the experience of simultaneously feeling warmth and fondness towards communities we may originate from, while also feeling alienated from them in some ways. It is my joy to help clients feel resilience in the face of such challenges, and maintain hope that, as MLK once said, "the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends towards justice."
