Hi! My name is Joni and I offer individual therapy for adults and teens. I specialize in working with ADHD, anxiety, and life transitions.
Licensed Professional Counselor Associate in Richardson, TX
Supervised by Dieula Previlon, LPC-S
The teen and young adult years are a time of change and discovering yourself. Together we can work on identity issues, life changes, clarifying your values and goals in life, and gaining independence. Before I became a therapist, my background in teaching and college/career counseling enabled me to help many teens discover their path in life and reach their goals. Now I work with all aspects of teen and young adult life: academic, career, social relationships, and mental health.
Anxiety can be overwhelming, and can be a huge obstacle to reaching your goals in life. Together we will work on building self-awareness, adding coping skills to your toolbox, and gaining acceptance of your anxious thoughts and feelings in order to give them less power over you. I believe that you are more than your anxiety - and you have the power to live according to your values without anxiety getting in the way.
As someone diagnosed with ADHD-I in their twenties, I know what its like to live with ADHD. I have experience helping clients manage their day-to-day life, build on their unique strengths and interests, and tackle the anxiety and depression that commonly comes along with having a brain that works differently.
I have found Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to be especially useful for those seeking to overcome anxiety. While we often tend to seek out "quick fixes" to suppress or avoid our anxiety, these efforts only tend to make us feel worse. ACT is about learning to stop avoiding and denying painful emotions, instead accepting them as a part of ourselves while untangling their hold over our lives.
I follow the teachings of American existential psychiatrist Irvin Yalom, who aims to "create a new therapy for each patient". Existential therapy is about building self-awareness, understanding one's identity, creating meaning, being present in the here-and-now, and accepting anxiety and death as part of life.
I believe in the uniqueness of every client - no two people experience life the same way. When you come into my office I will always treat you as an equal and listen to your concerns and experiences - you are the expert in your own life. Treatment goals are always developed collaboratively and openly, and you have the power to determine what you'd like to focus on in therapy sessions.
It can be difficult to adjust to big changes in life - going to college, moving out, starting a new career, or changing family situations. I believe that all clients are capable of navigating these new directions in a way that lines up with their values. My job is to join with you on your journey and support you as you move towards your authentic self.
