Do you sometimes wonder why life looks so easy for others, but you just feel overwhelmed most of the time. DBT is SO helpful! It's all about finding skills that you can do at school/work, home or anywhere that you need them to feel in control & capable of doing hard things. If you aren't the touchy-feely type or you aren't quite ready to go deep and heal your trauma, DBT can be a great option. It is practical, action-oriented, and based on research so you know the skills will work.
Traumas like sexual assault, neglect as a kid, or even car accidents can wreck havoc on lives. I am trained in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and am looking forward to EMDR training in the beginning of 2022. Additionally, I participate in a weekly complex trauma and dissociation supervision group. As a therapist at Hope For The Journey, I believe that you deserve to feel strong and like yourself no matter what you've been through. If you're ready to feel better, call today.
Have you ever been in a bad mood and decided to go outside for a run and then realized you had a great rest of your day? This is because you chose a behavior (running) that positively impacted your mood. That's the basis of CBT. Sometimes you can feel stuck in worry or like you'll never feel happy again. CBT helps you shift your thinking or behavior, and this, then, helps you to feel happier, let go of worry, and enjoy your life.
You might not know if you actually went through a "trauma". There's always someone else's story that feels legitimately worse than what happened to you. But what most people don't understand is that trauma can be any experience that felt overwhelming & still bothers you. There can be little traumas and Big Traumas, but both can make your life and relationships hard for years to come if not dealt with. The good news is there's help! You don't have to continue to feel stuck or disliking yourself.
When your brain doesn't know how to filter out the unimportant and every sound or sensation gets equal attention, it is forced to work in overdrive all the time. It's exhausting and can lead to a ton of anxiety as you try to "pretend normal". The good news is that when you start to understand your brain and develop systems to help you focus on the important stuff, school/work/daily life can get a lot easier. My job is to help you explore things that work so you can enjoy life again.
You might not understand why you feel so angry or irritable all the time. It just explodes and then you find yourself in trouble, hurting the ones you love, or just shutting down. You're sick of it, but you don't know how to change things. You feel stuck. Here's the thing: anger is rarely the real issue. Most times, there's something else underneath. Maybe you went through something hard. Maybe you are actually sad or scared. Once we understand the cause, we can create real changes for you.
