PTSD and Complex PTSD so both one time event trauma and complex and relational trauma or ongoing trauma happening in relationship. This can mean anything from rejection to abandonment, neglect to abuse. Oftentimes people think it needs to be a near death experience however this is not the case, it is any significant event causing an emotional response and relative helplessness.
I've worked with depersonalization and derealization of dissociative disorders as well as alternate identities of dissociative identity disorder, all a form of detachment and dissociation due to trauma. With the challenging nature of these disorders for clients, I feel much respect and admiration is due for their creativity in coming up with necessary survival skills and resiliency. We work to find safe ways to track, ground, and communicate between parts of the self.
Our family of origin sets us up for our "modes" of attachment where current relationships can still trigger our past feelings of abandonment, rejection, invalidation, etc. along with their correlating sensations in the body. This all makes for a difficult time navigating current relationships, even if they are healthy. I enjoy showing clients where attachment styles may affect them currently in relationship and how we can heal past wounds creating a sense of wholeness they've never had before.
Have a background working at a residential/outpatient treatment facility based in IFS, and continue to refer to the model. Thinking of true self and parts of the psyche has been helpful to most of my clients to move past many of their problematic behaviors/thought patterns and to get to how we can heal their attachment wound.
Somatic therapy (somatic experiencing) has helped my clients to see the psychobiological aspect of therapy and how it affects both the body and mind.
Art therapy is a wonderful therapy to help reintegrate the nervous system after a trauma and process preverbal events. It is great for self- exploration and reconnecting with the self.
