About My Clients
Most of my clients are caring, quite intelligent and good problem solvers, so it’s confusing when overwhelm and fatigue set in. “I want to find me again,” is a common refrain. Many struggle with perfectionism & procrastination and a mean Inner Critic. Many clients are over the age of 40. It's especially challenging if you're a therapist who is looking for a counselor of your own. You deserve to be picky and select someone with experience who won't just ask, "What would you tell a client?"
My Background and Approach
My style is strength-based, highly interactive, practical and supportive. I am passionate about educating clients in the importance of self-care during life transitions, assertive communication skills and setting and maintaining appropriate boundaries at work and home. I'm also Enneagram-friendly! With over 25 years of experience as a therapist, I bring tons of professional, life and parenting experience, perspective and humor (as appropriate) to the counseling sessions. Prior to my career as an LPC, I was a pharmaceutical and hospital sales rep in the '80s. As a LPC Supervisor, I help counselors-in-training to REALLY listen to their clients and "honor the process." I love to facilitate small group workshops integrating neuroscience, positive psychology, self-compassion and mindfulness techniques to help clients achieve the overall well-being they desire.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
While I was raised Catholic, I didn't go to Catholic school. Over time, and as I learned about patriarchy, I consider myself in the spiritual but not religious category. I welcome and respect all faith perspectives. Abuse of power pisses me off. I've read Richard Rohr, Brene Brown, Tara Brach and Kristen Neff (self-compassion.org). I'm familiar with Energy Psychology tools and have basic Reiki training. Politically, I'd considered myself moderate but the polarization during the Trump administration was so very distressing for me and many of my clients. Social and racial causes, affordable healthcare and basic human kindness and tolerance are issues close to my heart. I am LGBTQ affirming and have experience working specifically with lesbian couples. I do refer for medication when appropriate - that is, someone is really suffering with symptoms that are debilitating or not improving with time & therapy.
