I have studied the classic Internal Family Systems Model as taught by Dr. Richard C. Schwartz. I hold to the belief that humans have various parts that are activated depending on the situation. If we address these parts with compassion, our true self surfaces and we live in congruence and with self love and honor. I have practiced this model with clients, and have experienced it is my own healing journey over the last decade, and see the power in this orientation.

My training in mindfulness began 15 years ago as I participated in the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) training as taught by Jon Kabat-Zinn, which lead to various contemplative and meditative practices in my personal journey. I received further training in mindfulness as I taught the practices with court ordered individuals who struggled with addiction, anger, and impulse control. Also in graduate school I researched the impact of mindfulness on anxiety in high school students.

I have worked with court ordered, and self admitted people in the areas of anger management and domestic violence. During treatment we look at strategies for self awareness around the expressions of anger, and examine healthy relationships. Also it is believed that anger is a secondary emotion that often avoids the more vulnerable feelings. So in our work together, we create safety to address the root, and not only expressions of anger and rage.

Past events can impact our ability to live freely in the moment. Traumatic events such as divorce, sexual abuse, violent acts, humiliation, war, unexpected death, public shaming, and spiritual abuse can create volatile reactivity and physical sickness in our bodies. However, healing can occur and you can be free to live your fullest life. I specialize in creating safety and a scaffolding of support around you, so we can strategically engage the trauma to release pain that is harming you.

Life is uncertain, and we may thrive in some changes in life like an epic hero, but some changes might leave us disrupted and feeling shipwrecked and lost. If a stressful event has derailed you from your life, I will work with you so you can experience healing and restored energy. Common events that result in adjustment disorder are issues of identity, moving, birth, death, graduation, termination, marriage, breakup, sobriety, sexual activity, and any other of life's endless stressors.

In therapy there is a potential to get lost in the story, and to disassociate from the experience. My training in Gestalt, paired with mindfulness, emphasizes what is happening in the current moment to give freedom from the stored pain and trauma in the body. I have received coaching and training in using Gestalt techniques in group and individual therapy.

I have worked with court ordered and self admitted persons in the field of domestic violence and anger management. I was formally trained to address the cycle of violence and expression of anger. I also believe that anger is a secondary emotion that protects the individual from more vulnerable emotions, so part of the therapeutic process is addressing the underlying feelings that exist in the individual and in their relationships.

Right now the world is experiencing an Adjustment Disorder. Everything that was commonplace has been altered, via social distancing, stay-at-home orders, closing of "non-essential" businesses, and making physical schools turn to online. This is disruptive the to psyche of society, and in turn, the mental wellbeing of the individual. Adolescents are a paradox of being both the strongest and most resilient of our species, while simultaneously being extremely sensitive and fragile. I feel honored to hold space for the youth of today as they struggle with the surmounting pressures of the world, rapidly changing technology, suicide and self harm becoming commonplace, all while their brains are not yet fully developed. In this I offer youth a place to make sense of their identity, purpose, and adverse experiences.

EMDR (Eye Movement, Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a evidence based practice that helps gets past an individuals resistance, and makes sense of traumatic and adverse experiences. It is a beautiful tool that allows the individuals brain to reorder, and recalibrate after events have shocked it into disorder or created triggered response patterns. EMDR is also a powerful way to decrease the intensity of unbearable situations and then allowed them to be reconciled to the self.
