About My Clients
You’re overwhelmed. Could the world just give you a break and give you some space to breathe? You try to make the right choices but nothing can ever just be simple and easy. Nothing feels good enough. You hold on to the pain of past mistakes long after you make them. You worry about other people seeing the real you so you push yourself to be whoever they need you to be. You can recognize when your mind leads you astray, but what the hell are you supposed to do to change it?
My Background and Approach
Your worries, self doubt and guilt don’t come from nowhere and ignoring them only works for so long. We will explore your personal history to gain an understanding of why your mind works the way it does. Therapy is a team effort, I want you to ask questions and challenge what I say to make sure the work we do meets your goals. I aid clients in exploring their thoughts and feelings to work toward identifying the purpose of the mind's actions and what it is trying to accomplish. We will explore how we can change your relationship with your mind and work toward the healthy relationship you want to have with it. The work of therapy is learning to identify when the mind is making a valid point and when it is acting as a misguided helper.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
I believe that people shape themselves to survive their environment and the people around them. Every action makes sense in a certain context, shutting down and avoiding others makes sense when you are surrounded by unsafe people. Feeling worry about a persons reaction to you makes sense when you've lived in an unpredictable environment. I believe no one should have to explain, justify or fight for who they are or who they love. I believe there are coping skills that helped us in the past that may not help us now. I know how difficult it can be to change these behaviors that our mind screams are keeping us safe, I also know it can be done and I know that the work is worth the result. I believe that all dogs are good dogs, my dogs especially. I believe finding times to be silly is one of the best things a person can do for themselves. I believe everyone should allow themselves to ugly laugh at a terrible pun when they hear it.
