Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in Los Angeles, CA
Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a tool for treating trauma, anxiety, depression, OCD, and many other experiences. It utilizes bilateral stimulation to retrain your brain & nervous system, basically to change how your body and mind reacts to specific memories or emotions. This process affects everyone differently. We will collaborate to make sure you feel ready if you choose this approach.
Attachment is a fancy therapy-word for important relationships. Our earliest relationships with our primary caregivers become the foundation for how we relate to others throughout our lives. But attachment is fluid, so later relationships still affect us such as with friends or mentors. If there were wounds in early relationships, then our self-esteem, romantic/platonic relationships can also be impacted later. I will help you heal old wounds and foster new, healthy relationships.
Working relationally means I will connect with you as myself. I am a real person in the room with you, with humor and personality. I am not a blank slate, I will not sit silently and stare at you while you talk. I will still maintain professional boundaries and the focus will always be on you, I will listen empathically and share in your human experience.
Worry, stress, obsessive thoughts and actions are all aspects of anxiety. Everyone's anxiety looks and feels different. Together we will identify tools that will work for your specific needs. We will also examine how you developed your anxious tendencies in order to avoid future triggers.
Relationships require each person involved to practice respectful communication and self-advocacy. Together we can help you identify your needs and triggers, manage overwhelming feelings and set appropriate boundaries. Communication styles can be negotiated in healthy ways with practice. Also, even if you are seeking individual therapy, we can address your relationships with others, romantic, familial or otherwise, in order to achieve fulfillment in all areas of your larger world.
Trauma can occur from one major event or from ongoing traumatic experiences. In other words, we can develop symptoms of trauma from "big T" traumas or a collection of "little t" traumas. After a single traumatic event, we can employ a variety of techniques to help stabilize your daily experiences and move you toward feeling healed. When a series of traumas has occurred, we work together to create safety, structure and ongoing healing throughout all areas of life affected.
