Committed to helping individuals identify areas in their lives where they feel stuck, whether struggling to fit in, feeling anxious, or adjusting to change. My areas of expertise include: helping people process experiences with racism, anxiety, depression, grief and loss, adjustment issues, and coping with chronic illness.
My Background and Approach
I am committed to social justice and profoundly values agency and voice in therapy. Selam recognizes therapy is often stigmatized and has caused harm, specifically against people of color. Her dedication to eradicating social injustice makes her acutely aware of the roles that racism, sexism, and other forms of oppression cause mental and emotional hardship, making it difficult to cope and vocalize when one needs help.
My approach to therapy intends to create a safe space that invites clients to share and process vulnerable personal and social experiences and issues they expect individuals to remain silent about. Her work aims to help clients recognize and obtain liberation the way they see most fit.
My Personal Beliefs and Interests
As a child of immigrants, I respect and value culture and language and the sacrifices immigrants and refugees make to provide the best life for their children. I also recognize with these sacrifices come drastic differences in culture, values, and belief systems, making it difficult to fit into a society that undermines your existence. I understand the difficulty of navigating drastically different cultural and social spaces.
My experiences as an African-American woman who has experienced racism allow me to realize that people of color often have to sit with these traumatic experiences with almost no safe outlets to speak and unpack their effects on our lives. I also recognize that therapy historically targets and speaks to the needs of white individuals. In my practice, I hope to support clients on their journey to liberation.
I support Blacks Lives Matter, Stop Asian Hate, and MeToo social movements. Our world has no place for any hate.
