Trauma can come in many forms, as can your ways of coping with it. When your physical or emotional safety is threatened, different parts of you take on extreme roles such as dissociation, distraction, self-criticism, and avoidance in order to protect your core Self. By being a compassionate witness to your trauma, you can heal the wounded parts of you that took on the negative beliefs about yourself. Your protective parts can then stand down, giving you space to lead a compassionate life.
Our relationship with our caregiver growing up is hugely impactful on our relationship with ourselves and others as we become adults. If you experienced relational trauma from a caregiver (i.e. abuse of any kind, invalidation, emotionally absent caregivers, etc), you may struggle to regulate your emotions, develop healthy relationships or a sense of Self. Using IFS, you can have a corrective experience to heal the wounds and develop a loving, compassionate relationship with yourself and others.
In our society, it is hard not to compare ourselves with everyone else. We see what others post on social media and use this as a measuring stick for our own lives. Failure to keep up and achieve perfection feels like proof we are worthless. We can give up the comparison game and instead choose love and compassion for ourselves. Loving yourself starts with exploring how you came to believe you were less than and showing these parts of you the love you deserved and needed but never received.
"Internal Family Systems is a powerfully transformative, evidence-based model of psychotherapy. We believe the mind is naturally multiple and that is a good thing. Our inner parts contain valuable qualities and our core Self knows how to heal, allowing us to become integrated and whole." (Taken from ifs-institute.com) I have completed a year long Level I training for IFS therapy in addition to attending conferences and other CE modules. I am pursuing certification in IFS therapy as well.
