ADHD often doesn’t just encompass problems with attention, concentration, and/or hyperactivity and restlessness. Common struggles in those diagnosed include feelings of anxiety, depression, questioning one’s abilities, a long history of low self-esteem, difficulties in relationships and/or work, and feeling as if one is not achieving to their full potential. Those who are diagnosed often lament a life that could have been. I help people process these feelings and learn how to manage challenges.
"We came here for you"-is a familiar phrase many heard growing up from their immigrant parents. Feelings of guilt, depression, shame, confusion, and obligation are often experienced by members within immigrant families. Both offspring and parents from such families can feel a sense of misattunement with each other. My dissertation explored the role of empathic guilt in Chinese American immigrant families. Therapy can help process these experiences and help us move forward.
When thinking of teens, people often visualize sullen, irritable behavior. However, we must be careful to acknowledge they may be feeling stressed, depression and/or anxiety. Perhaps you’ve even noticed a long time pattern of perfectionism, self-esteem difficulties that we often see with increasing academic and social pressures. I help youth in the reduction and management of their struggles by utilizing a combination of individual therapy, parent consultation/education, and family treatment.
