Gender identity issues, sometimes called gender dysphoria or gender conflict, occur when an individual feels an inconsistency between their physical gender and the gender they truly feel or identify with. This most commonly exhibits itself as a physical discomfort with the gender one was assigned at birth, including the feeling of being in the wrong body. Children with gender dysphoria may express disgust of their own genitals or a certainty that they will grow up to be the opposite sex. Some individuals with gender identity issues treat this feeling by physically modifying their bodies to better match their gender identity. Gender dysphoria comes with it an increased risk for depression, anxiety, self-esteem issues, and bullying. We all want to love, be loved, do something meaningful, and have purpose in our lives, yet all too often prior relationships and life experiences have left us with coping skills that are unhealthy, ineffective or just downright baffling. As therapists, we are experienced in working with adults who have a history of childhood emotional abuse and/or neglect. Those we work with often find that they have difficult relationships, struggle to relax, and wish they were more in control of their lives.

Many individuals, couples, and families believe that their struggles have lingered on for so long, therefore “it will never go away”. Others tend to minimize it in hope that “it will just go away”. Research shows that work toward addressing problems can be the most interesting, rewarding, and empowering. It also promotes taking better control over one's life.
