Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy, first developed in the 1980s by Marsha M. Linehan, to treat patients suffering from borderline personality disorder. Since then, DBT’s use has broadened and now it is regularly employed as part of a treatment plan for people struggling with behaviors or emotions they can't control. This can include eating disorders, substance abuse, self-harm, and more. DBT is a skills-based approach that focuses on helping people increase their emotional and cognitive control by learning the triggers that lead to unwanted behaviors. Once triggers are identified, DBT teaches coping skills that include mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. A therapist specializing in DBT will help you to enhance your own capabilities, improve your motivation, provide support in-the-moment, and better manage your own life with problem-solving strategies. Think this approach might work for you? Reach out to one of TherapyDen’s DBT specialists today.

You’ve been feeling overwhelmed for a while. You’ve told yourself that if you just try a little harder or wait a little longer, your life will feel more in control. But if you’re being honest with yourself, the more time passes, the worse you feel. You’re starting to feel hopeless and you aren’t sure what to do next. You know it’s time to make a change. Going it alone hasn’t been working. You are starting to wonder if therapy could help you stop struggling and start enjoying your life.

Being human is often tough. Sometimes we lose our way and can feel stuck and overwhelmed. Sometimes we would like to change parts of our lives or ourselves but don’t know how. Therapy can be an empowering way to promote healing, growth, and wellness. Often, we initially seek treatment to address a specific concern and then begin to uncover other areas of our lives in which we want to make meaningful change. My goal is for this process to feel supportive, affirming, and appropriately challenging.

I work with adults who have experienced trauma, anxiety, mood disorders, life transitions, relationship stressors, grief, and loss, among other challenges, in a geek and LGBTQ+-friendly environment. Our work together focuses on you- where you are, your goals, and where you want the direction of your story to go. Part of the work is answering the questions that establish the goals and direction, and I look forward to exploring this with you where you are.
