Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapy, first developed in the 1980s by Marsha M. Linehan, to treat patients suffering from borderline personality disorder. Since then, DBT’s use has broadened and now it is regularly employed as part of a treatment plan for people struggling with behaviors or emotions they can't control. This can include eating disorders, substance abuse, self-harm, and more. DBT is a skills-based approach that focuses on helping people increase their emotional and cognitive control by learning the triggers that lead to unwanted behaviors. Once triggers are identified, DBT teaches coping skills that include mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. A therapist specializing in DBT will help you to enhance your own capabilities, improve your motivation, provide support in-the-moment, and better manage your own life with problem-solving strategies. Think this approach might work for you? Reach out to one of TherapyDen’s DBT specialists today.

I consider it an honor to work with individuals who have experienced a traumatic event or complex childhood trauma, need tools for managing depression or anxiety, or have recently experienced a significant life change such as life altering diagnosis, break up or divorce. I thrive working with adults of all ages from diverse racial, ethnic and religious backgrounds.
Being human is often tough. Sometimes we lose our way and can feel stuck and overwhelmed. Sometimes we would like to change parts of our lives or ourselves but don’t know how. Therapy can be an empowering way to promote healing, growth, and wellness. Often, we initially seek treatment to address a specific concern and then begin to uncover other areas of our lives in which we want to make meaningful change. My goal is for this process to feel supportive, affirming, and appropriately challenging.

The to-do list is never-ending and what’s done never feels quite enough. You are diligent about keeping on top of things and it’s gotten you pretty far. But, you find yourself asking “I’m running myself ragged for this?” Well, you are not alone. My clients are busy, professionals who feel stressed, anxious, and struggle with imposter syndrome. They seem put together on the outside but struggle with burnout and feeling like they are one step away from catastrophe.

You feel anxious and it's hard to shut your brain off. People tell you to relax, but it's not that easy for you. You've worked hard to get where you are, but it's hard to sit back and enjoy it. Your standards for yourself feel too high, and you question how long you can keep this up. You tend to doubt yourself and your abilities and look to other people to reassure you. It's hard to take up space, feel confident, and speak your truth. A better way forward is possible in therapy.
